What Is a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is when infection or injury is causing pain, swelling or damage to the teeth or gums. Call us immediately for emergency treatment if any of the following happens to you or your loved ones:

  • Severe Toothache:

Tooth pain usually never goes away on its own. In fact, it usually gets worse along with the underlying cause. Save yourself needless pain and additional dental care; call Dentiland when you have a bad toothache. In fact, it’s best to schedule an appointment at the very first sign of tooth pain.

  • Swelling of Gums and/or Face:

If you experience facial swelling or swollen gums, and have not been injured, it’s very likely you have an infection. Infections needs immediate attention or they can get worse and spread to other portions of the body.

  • Knocked-Out Tooth:

In the case of a knocked-out tooth, locate the tooth and pick it up by the crown (the wide, top part)—never touch or pick it up by the root. Rinse the tooth with water gently; don’t scrub it clean. Try and reinsert it in its original position. If that isn’t possible, store it in a container in filtered water (if not possible, then clean, bottled water). Call us immediately for further instructions.

  • Broken or cracked tooth:

A broken or cracked tooth can be a sign of internal damage to the tooth. See us immediately.

Your Dental Emergency Is Our Priority

We understand how painful and unpleasant a dental emergency can be. That’s why we will do our best to schedule you for an appointment within one to two hours of your call. We can’t guarantee this will always happen but we can guarantee we will do our best to treat your emergency as soon as possible.

After you arrive for your appointment, one of our experienced dentists will examine you, take any x-rays needed and provide immediate treatment to relieve your pain and care for your tooth. In many cases, follow-up visits are needed to fully complete your treatment and ensure your oral health is restored.

How to Prevent Dental Emergencies

To prevent dental emergencies in the future, we recommend:

  • 1. Regular dental checkups and cleanings:

By seeing our dentists regularly for exams and x-rays, we can detect and treat small problems which prevent them from becoming painful, expensive problems.

  • 2. Daily brushing and flossing:

To minimize the risk of cavities and gum disease, you should brush twice per day and floss once per day. Our dentists will show you the best way to brush and floss your teeth. And remember to replace your toothbrush every two to three months.

  • 3. Sports mouthguards:

If you or a family member engages in contact sports, the risk of a dental injury is high. We can provide a customized mouth-guard to be worn during rigorous sports activities to help prevent injury to the teeth and gums.
